Author's Note: Once a carbocation intermediate is formed, it can have two fates, with both complying with the octet rule, however, giving very different products containing a different functional group. Understanding the two outcomes is very important to designing or interpreting organic chemistry reactions.

Fate of the Carbocation

The fate of carbocation formed depends on the reaction conditions. In every case, it is to fulfil its octet by accepting two more electrons and being transformed from a charged intermediate to a neutral, stable molecule.
