Author's Note: In the chapter on reactive intermediates, I extensively covered carbocation – its nature, structure, formation, fate, structural features stabilizing and destabilizing the intermediate, and lastly, in this section, I cover the four common organic reactions that generate carbocation intermediate, or in other words, four places one can observe or anticipate its formation. Learning these would make the process less overwhelming and make it easier to master organic reaction mechanisms.

1) Displacement Reaction (SN1)
In 30 alkyl halides, a heterolytic cleavage of a covalent bond between two atoms that significantly differ in their electronegativities occurs such that the leaving group or atom cleaves, taking along with it the bond electron pair. This process leaves the carbon atom with fewer electrons.
Due to the electron deficiency, the carbon attains a positive charge, forming a carbocation. The carbocation formation is the first step of the total two in the SN1 displacement reaction.
